Inspiration

My favorite photographer ever is Mary Ellen Matthews.  If you are an SNL fan like me, you've seen her work flash on the screen a few seconds between commercial breaks when you watch the show.  Every week I can't wait to see what she's done because it's always incredible and unique.

She tailors each shoot to match the subject's personality, and in a way that is delightfully clever... and (most importantly) she makes her subjects look AMAZING.  Proof that funny is beautiful.

Sometimes it's a simple portrait with nothing but the subject, sometimes props are involved.  Sometimes it's on a solid background, sometimes it's on location somewhere.  She mixes it up, but there's ALWAYS something in her photos that makes me feel like I know that person a little better, and it always just makes me smile, then go, "How did she think of that?!?!"

It makes me want to take photos of everyone I know as if they were hosting SNL.  What would their bumper photo look like?  We all deserve to be captured in that way.  So, while my style is different, my 'Choose Your Own Adventure' series is a tribute to the work of Mary Ellen Matthews, the GOAT.
